Let there be lights appeal

Help us reach our target of £40,000

St Stephen’s is a much-loved local church at the heart of the community. It has been a special building for over a thousand years, offering a sacred space for local people to gather for christenings, weddings, and funerals as well as for regular services and community events. It is also a place highly valued by visiting pilgrims to St Albans.

For over a year St Stephen’s has been an Open Church enabling many in the community to find a space of peace and prayer whenever they need it during daylight hours.

St Stephen’s Church has been the centre for much valued pastoral and community care activities, reaching out in love and care to those in need in the area. For all of you who value St Stephen’s Church in this community we are asking for your help and support.

We need to replace our very antiquated and out of date internal lighting.  The existing lights are both energy inefficient and expensive and cannot keep up with the demands of everyday use.  They also are not at all environmentally friendly. We have committed as a church to be an EcoChurch, and being energy efficient is part of that commitment.

Our plan for a new lighting system is to provide:

  • up to date LED lights that are better for the environment, cheaper to run and easier to maintain once installed.
  • a more flexible lighting system in which different parts of the church can be lit separately to enable us to set ‘scenes’ within the church for different occasions, and so reduce wastage when not needed.

We are therefore launching a fundraising campaign to raise £40,000 for a new internal lighting system.

If you feel you’d like to support this campaign you can do so in various ways.

  1. Make a donation online  – Anything you’d like to contribute to our fundraising campaign is greatly appreciated. To donate online  safely and easily please click here to go through to our Just Giving Page
  2. Send us a cheque – If you’d like to send some money to us please make the cheque payable to ‘St Stephen’s Church PCC’ and write ‘Let there be Lights!’ on the reverse of the cheque so we know where to assign the funds. Post to: St Stephen’s Parish Office, 14 Watling Street, St Albans AL1 2PX
  3. Sponsor a light or dedicate a light to a loved one.
We are offering the opportunity to sponsor a light in your name, or in memory of a loved one. Each light in our scheme can be dedicated to you, or someone you name, and will be recorded on a framed plan within the church complex. You will receive a limited-edition photographic print of the church in recognition of your contribution and be invited to attend our ‘great light switch on’ event, at the end of the campaign. Each light can be sponsored for £250. We expect 45 to be used in the final scheme. For further information please email: [email protected] or phone 01727 892598
  4. Pick up a night light holder and save your pennies.
To launch our fundraising campaign we shall be holding a service at 10 am on Sunday 6th October, our dedication festival at St Stephen’s, at which each congregant will be given a night light and glass holder. The idea is to take the glass holder away, fill it over the next few months with spare change, and return in February at the end of the campaign to a special candlelit service, handing in what has been collected as the campaign closes. If you can’t make the service on 6th October please contact us and we’ll arrange to drop off a night light and holder to you. Email: [email protected] or phone 01727 862598
  5. Offer some help – if you’d like to help in some other, practical way, or if you run a local business that could offer prizes for a raffle, or you have a ‘bright idea’ which might help us, please contact us: [email protected]

Thank you so much for supporting our campaign
